Summary

Communicating with people regarding problems or concerns is challenging for most of us, and when negative attitudes are involved, it gets even harder. Unfortunately, it is quite common for people to avoid tough conversations due to the unknown, the stress involved, the fear of the response, or the belief that it will not help at all. It’s unfortunate because this avoidance actually leads to more stress and the possibility of more problems building over time. This session offers a way of thinking and approaching conversations that provides confidence and security in problem-solving. By following a few key steps, you can make any conversation much easier, effective, and a lot less stressful. Whether you need to talk to a team member who is exhibiting a negative attitude or you are pulled into a challenging family meeting, you can feel confident in your ability to have an impactful discussion. Sometimes no matter how respectfully and eloquently we convey information, we run into people who do not waver at all from negativity or obstinance. This technique helps you to avoid worrying about how someone will respond as you focus on the attempt to find a solution to a problem moving forward. This session will offer practical tools and examples that will help participants by:

  • offering insight into why identifying a clear goal is critical in such conversations and tips on how to do that quickly.
  • identifying strategies on how to make a conversation safe for the other person to listen.
  • developing the ability to make your point without anyone feeling accused or attacked and ending conversations with clarity.
  • utilizing questioning to avoid the conversation from being manipulated or derailed by challenging behavior.
