Summary

Pain, sometimes managed, sometimes unmanaged, is a common barrier to quality of life for elders residing in long-term care homes. Pain has significant and measurable negative effects on elders, but it can often times be alleviated through observations and care by direct care partners. As direct care partners, staff members closest to the elders observe when an elder is being effected by unmanaged pain. By empowering direct care partners through education and understanding, their value to the quality of life of all elders will be enhanced. This presentation will provide direct care partners with knowledge of multiple aspects of symptoms of pain, both objective and subjective, common misconceptions of pain, barriers to effective pain management, and appropriate non-pharmacological intervention for pain management to improve every elder's quality of life.
