Summary

Long-term care facilities, among other healthcare facilities, are increasingly being recognized as sources of patient and staff exposure to legionella through the water distribution system. There are new standards that healthcare organizations must implement to reduce the risk of legionella and make our buildings safe. This session will cover:

  • What is Legionella and how does it cause infection?
  • How legionella is transmitted via water
  • Review of current requirements for a water management program to reduce the risk of Legionella
  • How to make your building Legionella-safe
  • How to document your water management program activities

Dr. Richard Van Enk graduated from Calvin College in 1977 with a BA in Biology. He earned a MS in Biology from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green in 1979. He taught biology at Calvin College and Hope College in Michigan. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology at Loyola University Medical Center.
