Opioid Crisis and How to Identify Potential Opioid Abuse Among Staff and/or Residents

Published by Health Care Association of Michigan

Opiate abuse and misuse has led to a 2017 public health emergency declared by the HHS. Nationally, opioids have caused an estimated 42,000 deaths in 2016. In Michigan, the number of deaths has increased 17 times from 1999 to 2016. In 2016, 2,356 deaths were attributed to over doses. In this presentation, we will identify areas of risk, warning signs of diversion, and procedure improvements for long term care and assisted living facilities. The purpose of this webinar is to provide an update on the opioid epidemic, both state-wide and nationally, tips to identify drug diversion, and ways to prevent drug diversion.

Learner Objectives:

  • Describe current state and national opiate and related controlled substance abuse statistics.
  • Examine risk factors for abuse, preferred medications of abuse, staff and resident abuse indicators, best practices to avoid diversion, and reporting.
  • Describe how to improve procedures.
This program has been approved for 1 contact hour for licensed nursing home administrators by the Michigan Board of Licensed Nursing Home Administrators. Approval Number: 489180047.
